According to a recent research many types of fruit juices such as orange, apple and grapefruit make some of the drugs less effective by affecting the ability of the body to absorb them. Medication used to cure various diseases like heart disease, cancer and organ-transplant rejection and infection become less effective when certain types of fruit juices are used with them. It is true to say that these juices potentially wiping out all the beneficial effects of these drugs.

David Bailey (professor of clinical pharmacology with the University of Western Ontario and leader of the study) find out the effect of grape fruit juices with certain type of drugs. He discovered that grapefruit juice increases the absorption of certain drugs and possibly turning to some doses toxic.

In the discovery, David Bailey’s team found that grapefruit and other such fruit juices substantially decrease the oral absorption of certain drugs undergoing intestinal uptake transport. In that research various volunteers took fexofenadine (an antihistamine used to fight allergies) with a glass of grapefruit juice and a glass of water with naringin or plain water. In that research it was found that those who take grapefruit juice with fexofenadine, absorbed only half the amount of fexofenadine as compared to those who take fexofenadine with plain water.

Etoposide (an anticancer agent), beta blockers (used for high blood pressure and heart attacks) and antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, itraconazole) become less effective due to the consumption of grapefruit, orange and apple juices .
