Migraine pain is one of the most common problems generally see in the emergency department. It is happened due to change in brain and blood vessels around the brain. It is a form of vascular headache which is caused due to enlargement of blood vessels (vasodilatation) and the chemical release from the nerve fibers that gather around the blood vessels. At the time of migraine attack the temporal artery enlarges due to which nerves around the artery stretches which results in chemical release from the nerve fiber that further cause inflammation and enlargement of the artery and result in severe pain.

Around 17% women and 6% of men have suffered from the problem of migraine. Migraine attack generally varies in frequency from daily to 1 per year. It can happen for 4-72 hours. It has also found that 80% people who have migraine have family history of this disease.

Migraine attack also causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and some people also experience sensory warning sign (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. Migraine pain also leads to decrease in blood circulation and sometime patient also feel cold hands and feet. Migraine also creates a lot of burden on the people as they cannot do their regular job. Migraine still remains largely under-treated and under-diagnosed

There are different types of migraine pain from which 80% of the people are suffering from common migraines. People suffering from common migraine generally not experience the “aura” where as people suffering from classical migraine experience an aura before their headaches. (Most often, an aura is a visual disturbance such as outlines of lights or jagged light images). Common migraine is less severe than the classical migraine. Status migrainosus is a migraine that does not go away by itself.

This is a very informative post. I actually have a migraine since time immemorial and it’s really difficult for me when I’m having it because I really can’t work and od my task due to very bad headache and I also feel a sharp pain in my head. It’s really a dreadful experience.

hi! i love your site. very helpful and informative. keep it up!

i too experience migraines every once in a while. strong smells or hunger or stress usually cause my migraines and when they’re starting to occur, i feel nauseous and bright lights hurt my eyes.

usually, medicines don’t work for me. i can’t do anything else but to sleep it off which is a hassle if i’m working, but that’s the only way to get rid of it for me because pain relievers have no effect.

i guess mine’s common because i don’t get the aura, just dizzy from strong smells and bright lights. can you believe i can’t even smell perfume because that triggers my migraines too.
