Phases Of Migraine - Understand Them Carefully

Broadly there are four phases of a migraine attack which generally do not undergo by all migraine victims. But still they should know about its all stages. The stages include:

  1. The prodrome that happened hours or days before headache.
  2. The aura that instantly precedes the headache.
  3. The pain phase or headache phase.
  4. The postdrome.


Now get to know about the details of these acute stages of migraine.

Prodrome phase

The symptoms of Prodromal happen in 40 to 60% of migraineurs or migraine sufferers. This first phase comprises of mood swings, irritation, depression, exhaustion, yawning, excessive sleepiness, willingness to have any kind of special food, diarrhea, increased urination etc. Normally, any of these symptoms attack the person before the headache phase of the migraine attack by several hours or days.

Aura phase

For 20–30% of people who suffer migraine with aura includes focal neurological phenomena which precede the attack. It appears progressively for 5 to 20 minutes and in many cases it appears for one hour as well. The headache phase starts after few hours of the end of the aura phase. It symptoms include visual, sensory, motor in nature, olfactory hallucinations, temporary dysphasia, vertigo, dumbness of the face and hypersensitivity to touch.

Pain phase

The typical migraine headache can be either one sided, two sided or both, shaking and gradual etc. The pain at ones goes to maximum level and then after a time comes down slowly. It normally lasts for 4 to 72 hours in adults whereas in children it persists for 1 to 48 hours. The migraine pain occurs with various other symptoms. Some patients experience nausea, vomiting, phonophobia, osmophobia and some look for a dark and calm room. The other symptoms are blurred vision, nasal stuffiness, diarrhea, polyuria, pallor or sweating.

Postdrome phase

The patient can feel exhausted, pale, irritation, listless, lack of concentration, scalp tenderness and mood swings. After the attack, some patients also feel like revitalize where as other patients reveal melancholy. In some cases, some of the minor headache phase symptoms will be continued reduction in appetite, photophobia and lightheadedness. On the other hand, some patients, a 5 to 6 hour sleep might lower down the level of pain but they feel headache when they move speedily. It is important to note that these symptoms disappear after a nice night sleep.
